I’m no stranger to registering entirely too many domains, and that is indeed my preferred way of starting a new project. Statistically, I’ve probably actually utilized 20% of all the domains I’ve ever registered. Maybe even 10%. It’s not a very effective strategy.
Some of my projects have been so small even I didn’t feel like they warranted a domain of their own. They’ve generally been housed on subdomains of nkantar.com
, which has never really sat all that well with me, but I couldn’t really justify the cost of getting each some cool domain when they’re really rather low value toys.
A couple of weeks ago I felt inspired to solve this a bit better, and decided that I could be happy with a single cool domain meant to house all these little one-offs, so long as I could find one that felt right. The .tools
TLD seemed appropriate, and after a bit of searching I settled on pileof.tools.
I moved the few things needed to move, added redirects to the old URLs, and it’s great. I even gave it a little homepage, listing stuff intended for public consumption. Yesterday’s post already showcased it a bit.
I’m excited to now have a good domain for starting projects, so that I may save probably some $50/year on registrations that ultimately go nowhere. Or so I hope… 🤞
