Digital and Analog Writing

I write both on a computer and on paper, and the two rarely mix.

This post is somewhat of a response to on digital vs analog journalling | heyraeh.

I write both digitally and analogly. The two mediums serve different purposes, and effectively always have.

This very post you’re reading has been produced entirely digitally. I read the aforementioned post inspiring it on a computer, I typed it on a computer, and you’re likely reading it on some sort of a computer, unless you printed it out, in which case think of trees. I wrote this not only because I wanted to write it, but because I wanted others to read it.

My journal, however, is an analog affair. I write purely for myself with a fountain pen in a notebook. The tactility, slowness, and permanence are all helpful to the act of processing what I’m writing about for therapeutic reasons. Journaling is therapy to me.

Many moons ago I did briefly journal digitally, but it never felt right. My current method is unquestionably less convenient and accessible, and I appreciate that may rule it out for many folks, but it just feels right to me.
