Blaugust 2025: Low Stakes Hot Take

What a lovely prompt by a fellow Blaugustian!

My low stakes hot take: board games are incredibly overrated.

When I was younger I used to enjoy some board games. I definitely played Aggravation and Monopoly growing up in Bosnia, and Clue with family in the US. I then played Catan as an adult once, and I’m convinced the only reason I enjoyed it was the copious amount of red whine I consumed whilst playing.

Card games, at least simple ones, are less off-putting to me. Uno is brilliant, Exploding Kittens is silly, and some traditional card games—like variants of poker—can be fun, if played leisurely enough. If played seriously, as is the case with every office poker night I’ve ever encountered, I’m out.

I’m generally not much of a fan of “activities” at parties. I guess I’m a conversationalist at heart, because that’s all I really want to do. So “game night” is something I basically never want to attend. But I’m just about always up for a chat!
